Types of German Universities
You will quickly learn that there are three different types of higher education institutions in Germany, including universities (German: Universität), universities of applied sciences (UAS; German: Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften), and thirdly, academies of arts, music, and film. You can choose from a wide variety of study programmes when you begin researching studying in Germany (German: Kunst-, Musik- und Filmhochschule).

- Universities are research-oriented organisations that prioritise theoretical methods above real-world applications. At these universities, students can pursue studies at all levels, including doctoral degrees.
- University of applied sciences: The application of research findings is the main focus of universities of applied sciences (UAS). These colleges have required internships, project courses developed in partnership with businesses, and classes taught by experts in the relevant fields. Doctoral programmes are only offered by a select few applied science universities.
- Academies of arts, music, and film : Students with artistic abilities, such as those in design, architecture, photography, or dancing, are welcome to enrol in arts, music, and cinema academies, which provide artistic training. In addition to providing artistic instruction, some of these organisations also provide pedagogical or scientific programmes that are connected to the arts. Doctoral degrees can be pursued in part.
